Once a homeless street dog, Matute, found himself leading a rather unconventional life as he charmed waiters, neighbors, and customers at a gas station nestled in the heart of the Jardim Novo Campos Elíseos neighborhood in Campinas. Adopted into the gas station family two years ago, this furry friend not only found a place in their hearts but also a place on the station’s payroll, complete with his own gas station employee uniform. Matute’s incredible transformation even earned him a public social media profile, with the goal of helping other abandoned dogs find their forever homes by visiting the station.
Matute’s past was far from easy. He used to scavenge for scraps on the streets and would often be found sleeping perilously in the middle of the road. His fate took a dramatic turn when, in March 2022, a compassionate young individual in Campinas discovered him after he had been hit by a car. This serendipitous encounter led to an outpouring of support from the local community, especially the gas station employees.
Giovanni Fernandes, the 24-year-old manager of the gas station, fondly reminisces about Matute’s arrival, saying, “Matutee came to the post office, and everyone was embarrassed and tired, so the boys went to the convenience store and bought him a sausage. They said he didn’t leave and stayed with them all day.”
Matute’s journey of rehabilitation has been nothing short of remarkable. As part of an advertising campaign, he received his very own service station uniform, marking a significant milestone in his transformation. Dedicated social media accounts were also set up to showcase Matute’s progress, with the gas station employees leading the way in sharing his heartwarming story.
One staff member commented, “Many people may be a little scared when they see him because of the scars on his face. But don’t worry, even though he no longer grows fur in those areas, he now feels no pain. referring to the scars from his previous life on the streets, which are visible on Matute’s physique on his Instagram page.”
